Till we meet again in Tränenpalast (Palace of Tears)

Hey girl!

When I first knew that we were going to the Palace of Tears as part of our culture integration in our Deutsch class. I was really curious about why it is called the Palace of Tears and can´t wait to go here to find out. When we were already here, I imagine a totally different place on my mind. I am thinking of Palast like a big old castle-like house. Instead of the place that I imagined, this place has actually a deeper meaning than what I expect it from the outside.

I don´t want to dig deeper into the history because I am no expert or should I say not in a place to tell what I am not really familiar about. Here is a map when the time Berlin was separated from East to West. The possibility, where you can enter from one side to another, is in the middle point station (Friedrichstraße Bahnhof). This station was connected to the holding area/inspection area which is now the Tränenpalast. To make the story short, it is where people meet or separate in one ends. The meeting or separation isn´t just as simple as that because sometimes no one ever knows if people could/will come back again to another side.

The inspection was not just as simple as 1,2,3. People went through a strict and thorough checking. As they say, if walls could talk, this place has a lot to say. In this same place, now you can find exhibits of some actual paraphernalia during that time (things used during the inspection, luggage of the travelers, orig. placard used and more). There are also confessions of individuals on how they feel about leaving one-side and going to another.

Just like in immigration, where an officer checks your identity and papers to qualify to get through. You´ll know by looking at this secluded inspection area how meticulous they do their inspection.

Why is it called the Palast of Tears? Maybe simply because of the separation of people to their loved ones in this place without the assurance of seeing them again. That´s truly a sad experience.

For now, no more tears just memories. The separation and division was a thing in the past.

Let's talk again on my next blog.
Yes, YOU lovely gorgeous.
